ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Kathy Derks (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) placed 15th individually to lead the UW-Stevens Point women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the 24 team field at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational run at the Saukie Golf Course on Friday. Freshman Matt Stelmasek was the top finisher for the men, who placed sixth in a 21 team field.
Derks finished with a time of 23:22.2, edging two other runners by less than half a second. Freshman Bailey Wolf (Oconto Falls, WI/Oconto Falls) crossed the line in 21st with a time of 23:36. Junior Emily Schlebecker (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) (41st), sophomore Bailey Boudreau (Wausau, WI/East) (49th) and senior Maria McQuillan (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) (54th) counted in the UWSP team score and had solid showing among the 370 finishers.
Stelmasek raced a 26:00 run in his first collegiate meet to finish 21st among 380 finishers. Senior Luke Johnston (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) (31st) and junior Alex Richardson (Hales Corners, WI/Whitnall) (45th) finished among to top-50.
The UWSP cross country teams head to South Bend, Ind., next Friday (Sept. 30) for the Notre Dame Invitational.
