The History of the UWSP Mascot

UW-Stevens Point's athletic teams sport a Pointer dog head introduced in 2012 and unveiled at that year's Fourth of July parade in downtown Stevens Point. The centerpiece of this visual identifier is a purple and gold pointer dog designed to capture the forward-moving, assertive spirit of UW-Stevens Point athletics.

The first use of a Pointer dog that we've found is on the cover of the December 1916 student newspaper titled The Pointer. It was the head of a Pointer dog in profile. It was used in 1917 as well.

By 1927, the use of the term Pointer was more common in student publications.

On October 26, 1938, a new sketch of a Pointer dog was used on the masthead of the Pointer. This masthead Pointer was retired in September 1946 and no Pointer dog adorned the student newspaper.

The first mention of Stevie the Pointer that we've found is in the 1953 Iris yearbook. After his appearance in the yearbook, Stevie was also introduced to freshman and transfer students in the Central State Student Handbook in 1953. This was a cartoon anthropomorphized Stevie, complete with different clothing for different occasions. Judy Clayton created him.

In January 1969, the Alumni Association had Stevie the Pointer pins created. Alum from the 1970s through the early 1990s know this happy, go-lucky Stevie. This image was created by a commercial artist from Stevens Point.

In 1994, another mascot was created. This mascot won first place in the collegiate mascot division of the national Americup Cheer and Dance Championship in 1997. Stephanie Pointer also appeared by 1997.  The Pointer reported on February 17, 1994 that the University officially licensed the logos.  This version remained in use until the rebranding of 2012.
