Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The sixth annual Team Schierl & Mada Pink Game for Cancer raised a new record total of $56,500 on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Community Stadium at Goerke Park.
For the second year in a row, the money raised by the event benefitted three charities: The Breast Cancer Family Foundation (bcff.org), which promotes cancer awareness and prevention through presentations in youth health classes at Central & Northern Wisconsin area schools, the Wisconsin Chapter of Bill Schroeder's Circle of Friends Foundation, which provides self-esteem and friendship-building experience to children with cancer, and the Joanne A. Suomi Memorial Fund, a fund that benefits the Special Needs Aquatics Program (SNAP), named after a Stevens Point resident who passed away from cancer, that impacts hundreds of children in the Stevens Point community.
A near-capacity crowd of over 3,100 fans, many wearing specially-designed pink t-shirts, filled Community Stadium at Goerke Park to see the Pointers defeat Coe 34-31. The t-shirts were sold at the game and during promotional events on the UWSP campus in the buildup to the game on Saturday.
During the game, the UW-Stevens Point football team wore special pink jerseys, which were auctioned off during a silent auction. The winning bidders received the game-worn jerseys and silent auction items also contributed to the money raised by the event.
"This event gets better each year," said Director of Athletics
Daron Montgomery. "This year's customized jerseys were a hit with student-athletes and fans, we raised over $50,000 for charities (a new record for the Pink Game), and we were able to again incorporate the Joanne A. Suomi Memorial Fund into our efforts. I know that the Pink Game committee's decision to recognize Jo's impact meant a great deal to Rory and Samara (Suomi)."
The sponsors of the event were Team Schierl Companies and Mada Custom, with additional support provided by U.S. Venture, BMO Harris Bank, Powerade, Schoep's Ice Cream, Sentry Insurance, Bull's Eye Credit Union, Berkshire Hathaway, Bio Life Plasma Services and Ministry Health Care.
"It was an outstanding event and wonderful to see the University, students, fans, the community and businesses come together in support of the Pink Game," said Tim Schierl, Co-CEO of Team Schierl Companies. "All of us are affected by cancer in some way and seeing this kind of overwhelming support is incredible."
