OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (4-5, 1-5) fell at UW-Oshkosh (5-4, 3-3) by a 41-15 final on Saturday in the final road game of the season.
Quarterback
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) completed 19 passes for 196 yards and two touchdown passes. He hit
Matt Getgen (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Austin Phillips (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) with completions for touchdowns.
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) led the rushing attack with 22 carries for 71 yards.
On defense,
Joe Berens (Wausau, Wis./West) had a team-high eight tackles, 2.0 for loss and had a safety. Gregory Westemeier added seven tackles and had a pass breakup.
The Titans needed just two plays to take the opening drive 75 yards for a touchdown.
Cashin accounted for 29 yards on UWSP's first drive, but the Titans stalled the effort at the UWP 25. The Pointers attempted field goal that was no good.
UWO found the end zone with 1:12 left in the first quarter as UWSP faced a 14-0 deficit after one.
The Pointers completed an 11-play 60-yard drive for their first touchdown of the game. Smith connected with Getgen for 15 yards to cut the deficit to 14-7.
On UWSP's next drive,
Brayden Wiczek (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) gained 25 yards on the first play. Smith and Phillips moved the chains with a 15-yard completion. A UWO penalty gave the Pointers a first down at the UWO 17. Cashin gave UWSP a first-and-goal at the seven with a catch. But four rushing attempts were fruitless as UWSP tried to tie the game.
Just before halftime, the Titans scored a touchdown, but missed the extra point as the Pointers trailed 20-7 at the break.
The Titans halted both of UWSP's first two drives of the third quarter with a sack. Late in the third, UWO scored a touchdown to put the Pointers down, 27-7.
UWO scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter. On the Titan's next possession, it began at the one and Berens tackled the rusher in the end zone for a safety.
UWSP used the momentum of the safety to pick up 11 and 17 yards on the first two plays of the succeeding possession.
Elijah Mott (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) moved the chains with an eight-yard catch. With 1:50 remaining, Smith hit Phillips for a touchdown.
Two plays later, the Titans scored a touchdown to complete the scoring.
The Pointers close out the season at home on Saturday (Nov. 15) with a 1:00 p.m. matchup against UW-La Crosse for Senior Day.
