WHITEWATER – Three UW-Stevens Point turnovers resulted in 21 of UW-Whitewater's 27 points on Saturday afternoon as the Pointer football team fell to the top-ranked Warhawks 27-14 at Perkins Stadium.
The Pointers were held to just 47 yards on the ground and 184 yards through the air while the nation's leading running attack was held to 221 yards, Whitewater's lowest output since a 183 yard showing in the season opener.
Scoreless for much of the first quarter, Whitewater struck first after a Pointer fumble, as Levell Coppage ran the ball in from nine yards out to give Whitewater a 7-0 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, another UWSP fumble inside the Pointer red-zone gave the Warhawks the ball on the six yard line. From there, UWW quarterback Matt Blanchard found Bernie Tamsett for a six yard touchdown, advancing the Whitewater lead to 14-0.
In the third quarter, the Warhawks intercepted a pass by Jake Swank (Oregon/Oregon) and returned it to the Pointers 38 yard line and from there, a 37 yard rush by Aaron Rusch and a one yard carry from Coppage made the score 21-0 Warhawks.
On the next drive, just 18 seconds later, Swank redeemed his mistake on the previous play as he found Anthony Aker (Milwaukee/Brown Deer) on a 60 yard pass completion and Jared Fohrman added the extra point, making the score 21-7 Whitewater.
After a Warhawk field goal made the score 24-7, the Pointers added their second score of the day, this time a 16 yard touchdown pass from Swank to Theo Maglio (Wautoma, WI/Wautoma), cutting the deficit to 10.
The Warhakws added another field goal at the start of the fourth quarter and from there neither team was able to find the endzone as the Warhawks went on to the victory.
Swank finished the day going 10-for-30 for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw one interception. Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) finished as the leading receiver for the Pointers, catching six passes for 85 yards but was held without a touchdown for the first time since the Pointers October 2nd loss to UW-Eau Claire. Keith Ingram finished the day as the Pointers leading rusher, gaining 80 yards on seven carries including a 47 yard run late in the game.
Defensively, Joe Mleziva (Casco, WI/Luxemburg-Casco) led the way with nine solo tackles and 11.5 tackles overall while Skylar Stecker (Hilbert, WI/Hilbert) finished with six solo tackles.
UW-Stevens Point (5-3, 3-2 WIAC) returns to action next weekend when they travel to UW-River Falls to close out the road portion of their conference schedule against the Falcons.
