MARIETTA, Ohio - Several member of the UW-Stevens Point track and field team are still alive in the hunt for a national championship, as day one saw several Pointers competing at the 2009 Championships, hosted by Marietta College.

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and McMurry (Texas) University are tied atop the men's standing with 14 points after five of 21 events, while University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is leading the women's championship with 23 points after four of 21 events.

Neither the Pointers men's or women's teams have recorded team points after the finals of the first events.

On the men's side, Mike Dellemann (Oregon) is currently in 13th place in the decathlon, posting a point total of 3,337 after five events. Highlights from his day included a 10th place finish in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 51.35 seconds, and a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.37. The decathlon continues on Friday.

In the 200-meter dash, Keith Ingram (Milwaukee) posted a time of 22.12, but failed to qualify for the finals.

10,000-meter run, Dominick Meyer (Beloit) and Corey Towle (Waukesha) finished 15th and 17th respectively in the final races of their careers. Meyer posted a time of 31:56.98 while Towle finished in 33:05.01.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Brad Koback (Amherst), Patrick Leonard (Chicago, IL.), Ernest Edmond (Southfield, MI) and Ingram finished fifth in their opening round heat, but their time of 41.52 was still good enough to qualify for the finals later in the weekend.

Jerry Prusinski (Rib Lake) had a toss of 160'1” in the hammer throw, but also failed to qualify for the finals in the event and Mark Cufaude (Evansville) did not register a height in the pole vault finals.

On the women's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Elizabeth Caine (Plover), Kathleen Folbrecht (Jefferson), Kristin Kuber (Tomahawk) and Laura Simonis (Rosholt) finished third in the first heat, posting a time of 3:49.89, good for a qualifying spot in the finals later this weekend.

Individually, Simonis finished with a time of 25.49 in her opening heat run in the 200-meter dash, failing to qualify for the finals. Caine also failed to qualify for the finals in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 25.23 in her qualifying heat.

Claire Roberts (Oakfield) was unable to qualify for the finals in the 1500-meter run, posting a time of 4:39.06, just short of the mark needed to qualify for the finals.

On Friday, seven more NCAA championships will be handed out as the men's and women's discus throw, women's pole vault and men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase finals will take place along with the remaining events in both the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.
