Brogren’s Ninth Double-Double Not Enough in Season Finale

Box Score LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (10-8) fell in four sets at Viterbo (11-14) on Thursday in the season finale for the Pointers.

Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) racked up his team-leading ninth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 15 digs, both team highs on the night. Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) led all players with 13 kills.
 
Meyers had a kill and served an ace in a 7-0 run as UWSP jumped ahead 8-2 early in the first. Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) served an ace and added a kill as the Pointers stayed in front, 12-6. Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each served an ace and Meyers piled on four more kills as UWSP took the opening set, 25-21.
 
Dietz and Smith combined on a block as the Pointers led, 5-3, to start the second. Niznik added a pair of kills, but UWSP fell behind, 14-11. Brogren served an ace in a 3-0 spurt to tie the set at 14-14. Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had two late kills, but Viterbo tied the match with a 25-19 win.
 
Niznik buried a kill and had an ace as UWSP again took an early lead in the third, 7-6. Meyers had two kills in a 4-0 run as the Pointers regained an 11-10 advantage. Dietz powered down three late kills as the V-Hawks took the third set, 25-22.
 
Dietz and Baeckman each had a kill as the Pointers fell behind, 9-3, in the fourth. Niznik and Meyers hit back-to-back kills to spark a 5-1 run as UWSP got within 10-8. Meyers had four more kills but the Pointers dropped the fourth set, 25-21.
 
The Pointers end the inaugural season with 10 wins, six of which came by a three-set sweep. Two wins, including the first match in program history, were won in five sets.
