24 Hits Leads to Pointers Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MAUSTON, WIS. – Collecting 24 hits in two games, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team earned a series sweep over Ripon College this Sunday afternoon at the Woodside Sports Complex. The Pointers took game one 8-4 and 8-2 in game two.

In game one, the Pointers (6-8) strung together three hits and four runs crossed the plate on two Red Ripon (2-12) errors in the second inning for an early 4-0 advantage. After back-to-back singles from Sawyer Schultz (Appleton, WI/North) and William Iloncaie (East Troy, WI/East Troy), Tyler Thompka reached first base on a Red Hawk fielding error to load the bases up for Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown). Rose singled to score Schultz, followed by fielder's choice that scored two runs for the Pointers after Red Hawks committed their second error of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ripon rallied back tallying four runs on two doubles and two singles cutting in the four run Pointer lead.
The Pointers tallied four more runs over the next two innings, while David VanVilet closed out the remaining three innings who allowed just one hit in three innings of work.

In game two, the Pointers were led by Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North) who went five-for-five with two RBI's , in a game that saw 17 hits for the Pointers.
UWSP did their damage early on scoring early in the game, scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning for an early 5-0 lead.
Ripon scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, but were unable to score off of the Pointers' pitching staff.

The Pointers pitching combined for a six hit day, allowing just two runs. Heinrich Walder (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt) (1-1) earned the win pitching three innings in relief giving up just one hit and struck out two.

UWSP remains on the road as they return to action on Sat., April 9 at UW-Whitewater to open up WIAC play. The first game of the double header is set for a Noon start.
