STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (19-21, 11-17) dropped both games to visiting UW-Platteville (20-19, 11-17) to end the regular season. The Pointers fell by an 8-3 final in game one before coming up short in game two, 9-7.
Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led the UWSP offense with five hits on the day. He scored a run in each game.
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three hits, including a double and a triple.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua),
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead),
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) each had two hits on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWP 8
Two pitches into the game, UWSP found itself trailing, 1-0. The Pioneers added two more in the second inning as UWSP was down, 3-0. Another UWP home run in the fourth put UWSP at a 4-0 deficit.
Olson drew a walk with one away in the fourth. He stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch. Mistele doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Argersinger singled to push in a run. Ramirez hit a triple to get UWSP within 4-3.
The Pioneers added a run in the fifth and single tallies in the seventh, eighth and ninth to complete the scoring. UWSP got a runner aboard in every inning from the fifth through the ninth, but were unable to manufacture a run in any of those frames.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out 10, the fifth time in his career reaching double-figure strikeouts.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) pitched the final 2.0 with one strikeout.
Game 2 – UWSP 7, UWP 9
UWSP fell into a 3-0 hole in the first inning as UWP scored three on two hits.
Mistele led off the second with a double. Argersinger belted a home run to get UWSP within 3-2.
Oliver hit a leadoff home run in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) and Mistele hit consecutive one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Argersinger hit a sac fly to put UWSP in front, 4-3.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) blasted a home run to start the fourth as the Pointers took a 5-3 lead.
After the Pioneers put up three runs in the top of the inning,
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) started the sixth with a single. He moved to second on a sac bunt and
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) was hit by a pitch to put two aboard. Oliver singled to plate one run. Olson reached on a fielder's choice as the Pointers went ahead, 7-6.
Platteville scored three times in the eighth to regain the lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mistele singled with two down. Argersinger worked a walk, but a fly out quashed the rally and the season.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 5.0 and struck one.
Kaeden Wagenaar (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs),
Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Jahnke had one strikeout each in an inning of work.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) tossed a scoreless inning.
With three stolen bases on Saturday, the Pointers swiped 76 bags on the season, tied for the third-most in a season. Drohner had 26 stolen bases this year, the third most in a season in program history.
