Wrestling wins Al Hanke Invitational behind four titlists and three runners-up

ELMHURST, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team had four individual champions and three runners-up to win the 2016 Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.

Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood), Joe Crook (Spring Green, WI/River Valley), Dan Squires (Muskego, WI/Wisconsin Lutheran) and Bo Seibel (Cambellsport, WI/Kewaskum) won their weightclasses for UW-Stevens Point, while Jared Kust (Shawano, WI/Shawano), Boone Roycraft (Omro, WI/Winneconne) and Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) finished second.
 
Top-seeded Vosters went 3-0 to claim the title at 125 pounds and improve to 18-2 this season. The sophomore received a first-round bye and second-round forfeit, before posting a major decision over fourth-seeded Jimmy Gallardo of Triton to reach the final. In the final, Vosters earned a 7-6 decision against third-seeded Anothony Munoz of host Elmhurst.
 
At 149 pounds, Crook pinned his way to the title, recording three consecutive pins to earn the Most Pins Award. He pinned his three opponents in a total of 10:05, including a fall at 4:42 of the championship match against top-seeded Cory Pych of Harper.
 
Jared Kust (Shawano, WI/Shawano) finished as the runner-up at 141 pounds with a 2-1 showing. After a first-round bye, the senior pinned Olivet's Dean Roberts and North Central's Matt McGowan before falling in a 5-3 decision to top-seeded Jimmy Nehls of Elmhurst in the championship match.
 
Roycraft won his first three matches at 157 pounds before dropping the championship match to top-seeded Tim Noverini of Elmhurst. Roycraft, the second seed, recorded a fall at 4:41 of his first match and a 10-3 decision to reach the semifinals. He then posted a technical fall over third-seeded Ross Pennock of Olivet before going down on a technical fall in the championship to top-seed Tim Noverini of Elmhurst.

Top-seeded Hermsen started his run to being the runner-up at 165 pounds with back-to-back pins in 2:20 and 1:10. In the semis, Hermsen posted an 11-8 decision over Tayler Grimsley of Olivet but had to forfeit the championship match.
 
Seeded third, Squires won the title at 174 pounds thanks to a fall and two decisions. He started the day with a pin at 1:04 and went on to record 6-4 and 4-3 decisions against the top two seeds, Paul Papoutsis of Chicago and Mitch Morris of Elmhurst.
 
Seibel tallied two pins on his way to winning the 197-pound weightclass. Seibel pinned Harper's Stone Dax at 3:57 in the first round and second-seeded Kyle Carter of Olivet at 2:38 of the final.
 
Cody Nielsen (Oconto Falls, WI/Oconto Falls) and Donny Ralston (Ladysmith, WI/Bruce) each posted third-place finishes, Nielsen at 184 pounds and Ralston at 285.
 
UW-Stevens Point takes on UW-Parkside on Friday, Jan. 22 in Kenosha.
