GLENDALE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team began its season by defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 8-1 and Alverno 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Nicolet High School.
UW-Stevens Point 8, Wisconsin Lutheran 1 | Box In its first match of the day, UW-Stevens Point (2-0) won three tight doubles matches and the top five singles matches to cruise past Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1).
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West),
Emily Kleist (Muskego, WI/Muskego),
Nicole Thorson (Ripon, WI/Ripon) and
Jordan Tyjeski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) were each victorious in both singles and doubles for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point got 8-6 wins from the pairs of Asfeld and Kleist and Thorson and
Kaylee Roberts (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) at the top two doubles spots and an 8-5 victory from
Abbey Johnson (Black River Falls, WI/Black River Falls) and Tyjeski at the third position to sweep the doubles.
In singles, the Pointers dropped just 12 games in the straight-set victories at the top five singles spots. Thorson and Tyjeski each lost just one game, while Kleist, Thorson and
Frances Weiss (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) were also victorious.
The Warriors' lone point came from Katarina Volkmann's 6-4, 6-4 win over Roberts at sixth singles.
UW-Stevens Point 6, Alverno 3 | Box Another doubles sweep gave UW-Stevens Point a cushion going into singles and the Pointers managed a singles split against Alverno (2-1) to earn the 6-3 win. Tyjeski picked up two more match wins to finish the day 4-0 in her first collegiate match.
The teams of Asfeld and Roberts, Johnson and Tjyeski and
Rachael Kwiatkowski (Sussex, WI/Hamilton) and Weiss each picked up doubles wins for UWSP. Asfeld and Roberts won 8-5 at the top spot, while the other matches finished 8-4.
UW-Stevens Point won the three even-numbered singles matches, getting wins from Thorson, Tyjeski and
Elizabeth Wilichowski (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton). All six singles matches were decided in straight sets.
Thorson cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles, Tyjeski won 6-2, 6-4 at fourth and Wilichowski battled to a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the sixth spot. Asia Butler-Yeo, Laeren Yates and Lauren Fischer won their singles matches for the Inferno.
UW-Stevens Point plays at St. Norbert on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
