WAVERLY, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season falling to Cornell, 5-2, and Wartburg, 4-3, on Sunday.
Against Cornell, the Pointers won the team doubles point.
Tristin Jantz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Ellie Aitken (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) got a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Brooklynn Steier (West De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) and
Allie Brosteau (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) needed a tiebreak, 7-6 (1), to earn the win at No. 3.
Brosteau got a win at No. 6 singles in a super-breaker. She won the opening set, 6-1, and prevailed in the super-breaker, 1-0 (3).
UWSP won the doubles point against Wartburg as well.
Chloe Regal (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) and
Annie Wierzbicki (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) got a 6-2 win at No. 1. Steier and Brosteau won by the same 6-2 score at No. 3.
In singles play, Aitken got a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3. Steier won at No. 4 singles in a super-breaker, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).
Wierzbicki dropped the No. 2 singles in a super-breaker, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (8). Jantz came up short at No. 1 singles, playing to a tiebreak in the second set, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Georgia Haddroff played to a first set tiebreak at No. 6 singles, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
The Pointers host UW-River Falls on Tuesday (Apr. 21) in the first round of the WIAC Tournament. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
