OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by UW-Oshkosh in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Kolf Sports Center Complex.
Box Score UW-Oshkosh (1-1, 1-0 WIAC) won two of the three doubles matches and got what it needed with a split of the six singles matches to defeat UW-Stevens Point (3-2, 0-1 WIAC).
Playing together for the first time this season,
Kaylee Roberts (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) and
Frances Weiss (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) earned the Pointers' lone doubles win of the day with an 8-6 victory over Ashlee Polena and Paige Kloth at third doubles.
Emily Kleist (Muskego, WI/Muskego) and
Nicole Thorson (Ripon, WI/Ripon) nearly gave UWSP a second point but lost 9-8 (6) at the top spot.
Two of UW-Stevens Point's three singles wins came in three-set matches. Kleist bounced back from losing the first set to win her first match at No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Bailey Sagen.
Elizabeth Wilichowski (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) came back strong after dropping the second set of her match against Hannah Nauth at fifth singles to claim a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
Abbey Johnson (Black River Falls, WI/Black River Falls) won her second successive singles match by cruising past Polena 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles. UW-Oshkosh got straight-set wins from Ganser, Sophie Pitz and Shauna Stoffregen at second, third and fourth singles.
UW-Stevens Point hosts Bethel and Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Pointers take on the Royals at 8:30 a.m. and the Vikings at 3:30 p.m.
