MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team used strong singles play to pick up a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday afternoon at McKinley Park.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (3-1) earned five straight-set singles wins and a pair of doubles victories to defeat the Raiders (1-6).
Nicole Thorson (Ripon, WI/Ripon) and
Abbey Johnson (Black River Falls, WI/Black River Falls) were each winners in both singles and doubles.
Thorson and
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) cruised to an 8-2 win over Monika Gurdak and Cali Bonie at first doubles for one of UWSP's two doubles points. The other came from
Rachael Kwiatkowski (Sussex, WI/Hamilton) and Johnson's 8-6 victory at the third spot over Brittany Kelley and Melanie Avery.
In her first career match at number one singles, Thorson topped Carly Grant 6-2, 6-2 to move to 3-1 this season.
Emily Kleist (Muskego, WI/Muskego) won by the same scoreline at second singles against Gurdak.
Jordan Tyjeski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) matched Thorson's 3-1 record by defeating Bonie 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.
Frances Weiss (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kelley at fourth and Johnson dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Avery at the sixth spot.
Michelle Roubik earned the Raiders' lone singles point with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 12-10 win over
Elizabeth Wilichowski (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton). Roubik also teamed with Grant for an 8-6 doubles win.
UW-Stevens Point begins Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 19 at 11 a.m.
