HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In its first match of the spring season, the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Fairmont State on Monday afternoon at Hilton Head Motor Coach Resort.
Box Score Fairmont State (5-8) took two of the three doubles points and won three singles matches, two in super tiebreakers. UW-Stevens Point (5-8) also pulled out two super tiebreaker singles victories out of its four match wins.
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) was the lone straight-set victor for the Pointers in singles, defeating Taylor Nichols 6-4, 7-6 at the top spot.
Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) rebounded from losing the first set to claim a 1-6, 6-2, 10-2 win at number two singles.
Nicole Thorson was victorious on her collegiate debut at fourth singles by virtue of a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 win over Janay Beamer. Fairmont State won the other three singles matches, including a marathon 6-3, 1-6, 12-10 win by Lauren Hamilton at the sixth spot over Kayla Maller, who was also playing her first match for UWSP.
The Fighting Falcons picked up wins at the top two doubles positions. Thorson and Sammy Gengler accounted for the Pointers' doubles point with an 8-4 win at third doubles.
UW-Stevens Point continues its spring break trip in Hilton Head by facing Northwood University on Tuesday, March 17.
