MENOMONIE, Wis. – Four singles wins led the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) match on Friday afternoon at South Tennis Courts.
Box Score UW-Stout (4-4, 1-2 WIAC) got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play behind victories at the second and third spots.
Emily Kleist (Muskego, WI/Muskego) and
Nicole Thorson (Ripon, WI/Ripon) gave UW-Stevens Point (4-7, 1-3 WIAC) a point with an 8-5 win over Angela Braun and Emma Pedersen at the top spot.
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) and
Kaylee Roberts (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) were narrowly defeated 9-8 (8) in a 1-hour, 20-minute match at second doubles by Anna Lano and Linsey Thsius.
Needing four points from singles to secure the win, the Pointers got victories from Asfeld, Kleist, Thorson and
Frances Weiss (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) at the top four spots to earn the 5-4 win. Weiss came back from losing the first set 6-0 to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 against Kelsey Pedersen at the fourth spot.
Thorson and Thsius split the first two sets before Thorson raced through the third for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win at third singles. Asfeld topped Braun 6-2, 6-2 at the top spot and Kleist defeated Emma Pedersen 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
UW-Stevens Point plays its second match in as many days at UW-River Falls at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.
