STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Visiting UW-Eau Claire swept the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team 9-0 in the Pointers' final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) match of the season on Friday afternoon at University Courts.
Results UW-Eau Claire (7-2, 3-2 WIAC) swept the three doubles matches at a loss of seven games and won each of the six singles matches in straight sets. UW-Stevens Point (5-8, 2-4 WIAC) saw its two-match WIAC winning streak come to an end.
The match between Paige Kuepers and Olivia Gallagher and
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) and
Kaylee Roberts (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) at second doubles was the closest of the three but the Blugold duo came away with an 8-4 victory. Sarah Henderson and Colleen McCullough and Brooke Volpone and Molly Sanvik were victorious at the other two spots for UW-Eau Claire.
Asfeld and Henderson's match at first singles featured a tight second set but Henderson avoided a decisive third set by closing out a 6-1, 7-5 win. McCullough defeated Kleist 6-3, 6-2 at second singles and Gallagher topped
Nicole Thorson (Ripon, WI/Ripon) 6-1, 6-3 at the third spot. Kleist and Thorson had each won their previous two WIAC matches.
UW-Eau Claire dropped three games in wins at the fourth through sixth singles positions.
UW-Stevens Point competes at the WIAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, beginning at 9 a.m. The Pointers have finished fifth at the tournament in each of the last two seasons.
