STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team dropped a pair of close matches, falling 6-3 to UW-Oshkosh and 5-4 to Bethel on Saturday at University Courts.
UW-Oshkosh 6, UW-Stevens Point 3UW-Oshkosh (2-5, 1-1 WIAC) used a doubles sweep and a singles split to defeat UW-Stevens Point (3-3, 1-2 WIAC). The closest doubles match was at the third spot, where
Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) and
Abbey Johnson (Black River Falls, WI/Black River Falls) were defeated 9-7.
The Pointers got wins from
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West), Lemmer and
Molly Hendries (Menasha, WI/Menasha) in singles play. Lemmer and Hendries each won their matches in third-set tiebreakers at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Lemmer rebounded from dropping the second set to claim the match 10-3, while Hendries came back after losing the first to take hers 10-4.
Asfeld won her match at the top spot 6-1, 6-2 against Erica Van Riper. The Titans won the other three singles matches, all in straight sets.
Bethel 5, UW-Stevens Point 4Bethel (1-1) won two of the three doubles points and managed a split in singles against UW-Stevens Point. The Royals won 8-3 at first doubles and 8-6 at third doubles and picked up wins at first, second and sixth singles.
Asfeld and
Hayley Schlueter (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) gave the Pointers their lone doubles point with an 8-3 victory at the second spot.
Lemmer, Hendries and
Rosie Buckley (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) were victorious in singles play in the middle of the lineup. Buckley won a marathon third-set tiebreaker 16-14 at third singles. Lemmer improved to 5-1 on the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the fourth spot, while Hendries registered a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at fifth singles.
UW-Stevens Point travels to UW-Whitewater (5-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 24 for a 3:30 p.m. match.
