Women's tennis opens with two wins

BELOIT, Wis . – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team opened its season with wins over Beloit and Carroll on Saturday afternoon.

UW-Stevens Point (2-0) lost no more than five games in any of the six singles matches and seven games in the three doubles matches combined against Beloit (0-2).
 
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West), Rosie Buckley (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) , Hannah Dexheimer (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh West) and Megan Zielke (Cleveland, WI/Sheboygan North) were each victorious in both singles and doubles play for the Pointers. Zielke, Dexheimer and Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) each won their first collegiate singles matches for UWSP.
 
Asfeld and Zielke each lost just two games in their straight-set singles wins, while Dexheimer and Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) each won 6-0, 6-0. Hayley Schlueter (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and Buckley earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at the third spot in the closest of the six singles matches.
 
In doubles, Buckley and Dexheimer played the closest match of the day but came away with an 8-6 win over Trina Capelli and Alxandra Kurpiel at the top spot. The pairs of Asfeld/Zielke and Molly Hendries (Menasha, WI/Menasha)/Kristen Finstad (River Falls, WI/River Falls) also picked up wins for UW-Stevens Point.

The Pointers got wins from the bottom half of the singles lineup and second and third doubles to edge the Pioneers (2-1), as Zielke made it four individual wins on the day with two more victories.
 
Asfeld/Zielke won their match at second doubles 8-4 and Finstad/Hendries came through with a 9-7 win at the third spot to give UW-Stevens Point two doubles points.
 
The Pointers then earned a singles split to close out the team win. Zielke and Dexheimer each won their singles matches 6-1, 6-2 at fourth and fifth singles. Lemmer was the other singles victor in a 6-3, 6-0 decision at the sixth spot.
 
The lone singles match to go to three sets was the match between Alison Lambrecht and Rosie Buckley (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) at third singles and Lambrecht came away with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win.
 
UW-Stevens Point opens Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at UW-La Crosse on Saturday, September 6.
