Women's hockey blanked by St. Thomas in NCAA quarterfinals

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sixth-ranked St. Thomas defeated fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Ice Hawks Arena.

Courtney Umland scored twice for the Tommies (20-5-3), who advance to face the winner of Plattsburg State and Williams in the semifinals. The Pointers, who made their fifth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament, finish the season with a 19-6-4 record and the 19 wins are the most by a UWSP team since 2007-08.

St. Thomas outshot UW-Stevens Point 38-30 in the game, including 13-6 in the first period. UST's Alise Riedel made 30 saves for her sixth shutout of the season, while Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) made 33 saves for the Pointers.

Umland scored at 13:18 of the first period on the power-play and the goal turned out to be the eventual game-winner. The Tommies then scored twice in the second period and twice in the final 3:04 of the game, including one empty-net goal.

In addition to Umland's two goals, Paige Baldwin, Karina Marette and Rachel Friberg each scored for St. Thomas. Hannah Burns added two assists and 10 Tommie players recorded at least one point in the game.
