Men's hockey comes back three times, drops nine-goal game to UW-River Falls

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After coming from behind to tie the score three times, the third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team could not do so a fourth time in a wild 5-4 loss to 10th-ranked UW-River Falls on Thursday night at K.B. Willett Arena.

Box Score

The Falcons (15-6-3, 8-3-0 WIAC) led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before the Pointers (18-4-2, 6-4-1, WIAC) tied the score each time. However, UW-River Falls took a 5-3 lead and hung on to claim the top seed in the WIAC playoffs. The Pointers will be the second seed and will host a WIAC Semifinal series against UW-Eau Claire.

Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison), Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) and Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn) were the only three UWSP players to record points and all had at least three points. Sharkey led the way with two goals and three assists, while Sharkey added two goals and an assist. Alex Hagaman led UW-River Falls with two goals. The five goals conceded marks the first time this season UW-Stevens Point has given up more than four goals in a game.

The score was tied at 1-1 after the first period after a power-play goal from Sharkey in the final minute in the period canceled out Cory Lushanko's opener just 72 seconds into the game. Brodie and Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) both hit the pipe early in the opening period.

The rest of the scoring in the game all occurred in the seven-goal second period. Wille Hess put UWRF ahead early in the second but Sharkey again tied the score with his 13th goal of the season. Hagaman's first goal gave the Falcons their third one-goal lead of the game.

Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison)'s first goal of the night made it 3-3 midway through the second period but Hagaman scored just 31 seconds later. The Falcons took a two-goal lead 1:39 after Hagaman's second goal of the night following a power-play goal from Mitch Kontny, which turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Kalisz cut the UWRF lead to 5-4 in the final two minutes of the second period off an assist from Brodie, his third of the game.

After the high-scoring second period, neither team managed to score in the final period as the Pointers outshot the Falcons 9-5. UWSP outshot UWRF 38-21 in the game but the Falcons scored four goals on seven shots in the decisive second period.

Scott Lewan made 34 saves for UW-River Falls, including 25 in the first two periods. Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made eight of his 16 saves in the opening 20 minutes for the Pointers.
