Women's tennis edged at Lawrence, 5-4

APPLETON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Lawrence University after the Vikings won the decisive singles match in a third-set tiebreaker in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at the Lawrence Courts.

The decisive match came at fifth singles, where Tess Vogel defeated Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker to give the Vikings (6-7) the win. The first two sets of the match were also tight, as Lemmer took the first 6-4 and Vogel won the second 7-5.

UW-Stevens Point (4-7) got singles wins from Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West), Molly Hendries (Menasha, WI/Menasha) and Hannah Dexheimer (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh West). Asfeld won a marathon third-set tiebreaker 16-14 at the top spot, after sending the match the distance by winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-4.

Hendries picked up a straight-set win at number four singles, 6-4, 6-3. Dexheimer also won her match in a third-set tiebreaker by rebounding from losing the second set 6-1 to take the tiebreak 10-5.

The doubles matches were played to six games, rather than eight, due to concerns about darkness. Dexheimer and Rosie Buckley (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) earned the lone doubles point for UWSP with a 6-4 win at the third spot.

UW-Stevens Point concludes its regular-season fall schedule by hosting UW-Stout on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. at University Courts.
