ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point dropped an 8-1 decision to Augustana (Ill.) before topping St. Ambrose 7-2 on Saturday at Lower Campus Courts.
Augustana 8, UW-Stevens Point 1 Augustana (12-2) won in straight sets at each of the top five singles spots after a doubles sweep.
Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) picked up the lone point for UW-Stevens Point (4-6) with a three-set win at sixth singles.
Lemmer won the first set 6-2 against Chelsea Lavin but Lavin came back to take the second 6-4. The match then went to a third-set tiebreaker, which Lemmer won 10-4.
The pairings of
Kristen Finstad (River Falls, WI/River Falls) and
Molly Hendries (Menasha, WI/Menasha) and
Abbey Johnson (Black River Falls, WI/Black River Falls) and Lemmer each lost 8-4 in doubles play.
UW-Stevens Point 7, St. Ambrose 2 UW-Stevens Point snapped a five-match losing streak by defeating St. Ambrose (4-3), thanks to five singles wins and a pair of doubles victories.
The Pointers got off to a good start with two doubles points behind wins from
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) and
Hayley Schlueter (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) and Hendries and Finstad. Asfeld and Schlueter won at first doubles 8-5, while Hendries and Finstad won their match at the second spot in a tiebreaker.
Hendries and
Hannah Dexheimer (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh West) each won their singles matches by 7-6, 6-4 scorelines. Hendries raced through her first-set tiebreaker 7-0, while Dexheimer took her 7-5.
Asfeld picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot. Finstad earned a narrow 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 win in a highly competitive match at fourth singles against Anne Bohnert. Lemmer did not drop a game in her second singles win of the day at the sixth spot.
UW-Stevens Point plays at Lawrence on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in Appleton.
