MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team finished fifth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship as play wrapped up at the two-day tournament on Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Results UW-Stevens Point, which fifth in the dual-meet standings, also finished fifth in points at the WIAC Championship. The Pointers earned nine total points, three from the dual meets and six from the tournament, in the overall championship standings.
In doubles,
Rosie Buckley (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) and
Hannah Dexheimer (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh West) placed second at third doubles after falling to Jenny Graham and Rachael Wabers of UW-La Crosse 8-2 in the championship match. In the top two doubles flights, the duos of
Katelyn Asfeld (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) and
Erin Lemmer (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) and
Kristen Finstad (River Falls, WI/River Falls) and
Molly Hendries (Menasha, WI/Menasha) each lost their fifth-place matches to finish sixth.
Lemmer was the top individual finisher in singles for UW-Stevens Point despite dropping both of her matches on Sunday in straight sets. Lemmer took fourth in the fifth singles flight.
Dexheimer and Hendries both placed fifth after winning their fifth-place matches on Sunday. Dexheimer edged Cortney Hallahan of UW-Stout 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 at third singles, while Hendries topped UW-River Falls' Molly Deering 7-5, 6-2 in the fourth flight.
Asfeld, Buckley and Finstad all lost their fifth-place singles matches. Asfeld won the first set of her match against Kelsey Hochberger of UW-River Falls 6-1 but Hochberger came back to win a super tiebreaker 12-10.
Following the conclusion of play, Hendries was selected as the UW-Stevens Point representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
