Men's hockey skates to 2-2 tie with Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but UW-Superior rallied with two goals in the third period resulting in a 2-2 tie on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena.

After the Pointers were unsuccessful on their first power play opportunity, Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) tallied the contests first goal, unassisted, to give UWSP an early 1-0 lead.

With time winding down in the first, sophomore Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) recorded his 16th goal of the season on a short-handed goal for a two-score edge heading into the first intermission. Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt) and Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) were credited with assists.

In the second, neither UWSP nor UWS was able to take advantage of its two power-play opportunities as the Pointers continued to hold a 2-0 advantage leading into the final period. The Yellowjackets brought the game back within reach with 15:22 remaining as Cody Hotchkin scored a power-play goal, assisted by Andy Singerhouse.

Looking for another score, UWS pulled its goalie with 1:12 remaining to add an extra attacker. With 27 seconds remaining, the move paid off as Jeff Forsythe evened the game at 2-2 forcing the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, neither team could net a goal in the final five minutes as Jaeger and Drew Strandberg held the opponent scoreless, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

Jaeger recorded 20 saves for UWSP while Strandberg tallied 17 for UWS.

For the weekend, the Pointers earned three out of four points, leaving them tied for third place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
