DULUTH, Minn. –
Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) scored two goals and
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied 23 saves as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team picked up a huge conference victory on Friday evening, pulling to within one point of a tie for second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings, with a 2-1 victory over the College of St. Scholastica.
The win gives UWSP two more points in the league standings, pulling the team to within one of a second place tie with Scholastica and UW-River Falls.
Heck got the Pointers rolling late in the first period with his 14th goal of the season, off assists from
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) and
Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN/Rochester), to give UWSP a 1-0 advantage after one.
A defensive struggle in the second, neither team was able to light the lamp in the second frame.
In the third, Heck's power-play goal at the 14:18 mark gave the Pointers a 2-0 cushion.
Scholastica came back to make things interesting, scoring with an extra attacker with 40 seconds remaining in the contest, but some huge saves by Jaeger down the stretch gave the Pointers the road victory.
Scholastica goaltender Colin Rundell suffered the loss, registering 23 saves. UW-Stevens Point held a 25-24 edge in shots on net and was 1-for-3 on the power play while holding the Saints to an 0-4 evening on the power play.
UW-Stevens Point (11-8-3, 7-5-3 NCHA) returns to action on Saturday evening, Feb. 4 with another big road game in Superior, Wis., as the Pointers take on the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
