DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team advanced to its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Peters Cup Championship since 2000 with a 5-1 victory over the Saints of the College of St. Scholastica Saturday evening.

Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) gave the Pointers the early 1-0 advantage with his 20th goal of the season off an assist from Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN/Rochester). Heck becomes the first Pointer to score 20 goals in a season since 2001.

Jerry Freismuth (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) tallied his third goal of the season at the 15:31 mark of the first off assists from Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt) and Detlefsen.

In the second period, the Pointers continued the pressure, as Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) tallied his second goal of the season off assists from Freismuth and Boeckman.

Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) added another goal in the second period to push the UWSP advantage to 4-0 after two periods.

In the third, Detlefsen tallied just his second goal of the season and third point of the night to push the Pointers lead to 5-0.

The Saints scored their lone goal of the night at the 7:16 mark of the third, but UWSP kept up the pressure and skated to the victory.

The Saints out-shot the Pointers 41-30 on the evening but the Pointers were able to hold St. Scholastica to an 0-4 night on the power play to aid in the victory.

Freshman goaltender Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied 40 saves on the evening to give the Pointers the victory.

UW-Stevens Point (14-10-4) will face defending National Champion and NCHA regular-season champion St. Norbert College in the league championship game on Saturday, March 3 at Cornerstone Community Center in De Pere, Wis. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
