Pointers take game one of NCHA Quarterfinal series

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Pointers used a pair of third-period goals from Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View), combined with 44 saves from Janna Beilke Skoug, to take game one of their Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Quarterfinal series against Adrian College.

Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead with just seconds remaining in the first period, lighting the lamp with her eighth goal of the season off an Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) assist.

A scoreless second period gave way to the third where with just over five minutes remaining Marvin's 13th and 14th goals of the season gave the Pointers some cushion, as the team held on for the shutout victory.

Adrian out-shot the Pointers 44-16 on the evening, but Beilke-Skoug stopped all 44 shots on net to earn the victory, just the second shutout of the season against Adrian.

“We played solid team defense,” said UW-Stevens Point head coach Ann Ninnemann. “We allowed Janna to stop the first shot, which she did, and we cleaned up any rebounds and picked up sticks in front of the net.”

UWSP (13-11-2) and Adrian (14-9-2) take to the ice at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the decisive game two of the quarterfinal series. The sixth-seeded Pointers need a tie or victory to upset the third-seeded Bulldogs of Adrian College.
