Pointers hold on to first place in NCHA

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team regained sole possession of first place in the Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCHA) Saturday afternoon as it defeated UW-River Falls, 5-4.

The Pointers wasted no time getting on the board as Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) scored her ninth goal of the season less than two minutes into the game off an assist from Janel Winters (Fairbanks, AK/West Valley).
 
Leah Gefroh knotted the score at on a piece midway through the first period and then scored again in the second period to give the Falcons the 2-1 advantage.
 
A total of six goals were scored in a busy third period, four by the Pointers.
 
Cassandra Salmen (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) recorded two of the Pointers third period goals, Emily Lester (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) and Josie Johnson (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) also added goals for UWSP in the 5-4 win.
 
Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) recorded 38 saves in net for the Pointers. Gillian McDonald and Ashley Kuechle split time in the net for the Falcons, recording a combined 32 saves.
 
UW-Stevens Point (6-2-2, 5-1-2 NCHA) returns to action Friday Dec. 7 as it travels to Duluth, Minn., for a weekend series against St. Scholastica. Action set for 4 p.m.
