SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team fell again to UW-Superior on Saturday, dropping the second game of the series 6-2 in Superior.
After a scoreless first period and a nearly scoreless second, Superior's Kerry Mayhew scored with just under a minute remaining in the period to give the 'Jackets a 1-0 advantage.
The third period proved to be a different story as seven total goals were scored in the final period. The scoring frenzy started with two more Superior goals less than a minute apart.
UWSP responded with five minutes left in the period as
Hannah Smith (Spokane, WA/East Valley) scored on a pass from
Erika Greenen (Naperville, IL/Central).
Less than a minute later, an
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) goal brought the Pointers within one at 3-2.
Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) and
Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield) were credited with assists.
The Yellowjackets owned the remaining minutes, striking again with three minutes to go and added two empty-net goals en route to the 6-2 victory.
Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) tallied 18 saves in the loss, while
Johanna Sommers (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) added one.
UWSP (9-8-2, 8-5-1 NCHA) returns to the ice Saturday, Feb. 4 for a weekend series with Adrian College at Ice Hawks Arena. Saturday's game will start at 7 p.m. with Sunday's game starting at 2:30 p.m.
