STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period and never looked back, rolling to a 4-1 victory over the eighth-ranked Falcons of UW-River Falls.
Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) gave UWSP the early 1-0 lead at the 11:43 mark of the opening period off
Travis Erstad (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) and
Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) assists.
Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) added a power-play goal at the 14:14 mark and
Jerry Freismuth (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) added another power-play goal at the 18:43 mark of the first to give UW-Stevens Point the 3-0 lead.
In the second, River Falls' John Bullis scored at the 16:48 mark of the period to cut the Pointers' lead to just two, 3-1.
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) gave the Pointers back the three-goal cushion at the 5:08 mark of the third period and
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied four of his 11 saves in the fourth as the Pointers skated to the victory.
UW-Stevens Point held a 22-12 advantage in shots on net for the evening and finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play.
UW-Stevens Point (10-8-3, 6-5-3 NCHA) returns to action in the twin ports of Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., next weekend, Feb. 3-4 with games against St. Scholastica and UW-Superior. Action begins Friday, Feb. 3 in Duluth at 7 p.m.
