SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team headed north for a Friday night tilt at UW-Superior, and it was the home team that came out on top with a 3-1 win over the visiting Pointers.
The contest was a key NCHA match-up, as both squads entered with an identical 8-3-1 conference record.
It was the Yellowjackets who lit the lamp first, when Kaiti Graham scored at the 17:03 mark of the first period.
Early in the second stanza, UWSP held a 5-on-3 advantage but was unable to score. Just minutes later, the Pointers found themselves on the opposite end of a 5-on-3 power play, but the defense successfully killed both penalties, paving the way for a goal by
Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield), who scored on her own put-back with 6:04 to go in the second period.
Eight minutes into the final period, a two man advantage for the home team resulted in a power-play goal by UW-Superior's Alison Shrift with 11:01 left. That goal would prove to be the game-winner, as the Yellowjackets put the puck into an empty net with just 21 seconds to go.
UWSP falls to 9-7-2 overall, 8-4-1 in conference play while UWS improves to 10-5-2 overall, 9-3-1 in league play. The teams finish out the weekend with the back end of a doubleheader on Saturday, with faceoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
