EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Tied 2-2 after the second period, a flurry of third-period goals gave the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team a 5-2 victory over the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire on Friday evening at Hobbs Ice Arena.
Max Bobrow (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) gave the Pointers the early lead at the 8:50 mark of the opening period, his second goal of the seasons, off assists from
Brandon Busse (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) and
Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley).
Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) gave the Pointers a 2-0 advantage at the five-minute mark of the second period, lighting the lamp for his 12th goal of the season, off assists from
Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) and
Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi).
Eau Claire answered with a pair of goals midway through the second period to even the score at 2-2 heading to the third period.
Nesper scored what eventually became the game-winner just 1:28 into the third off
Dylan Wizner (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) and Niemann assists.
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) and Politz gave the Pointers two more goals down the stretch, as the Pointers rolled to the 5-2 victory.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied 37 saves on the evening to earn the victory, his fourth of the year, whole Brandon Stephens stopped 32 UWSP shots and took the loss.
UW-Stevens Point returns home for a Saturday evening match-up against UW-River Falls in the team's annual Put a Check to Cancer night at K.B. Willett Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
