Men take first, women third at Get to the Point Invite

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's and women's swimming and diving teams brought home a first- and third-place finish as they competed in the Get to the Point Invite Friday and Saturday at the UWSP Aquatic Center.

The men's team brought home a first-place finish with 1271.5 points while the women placed third with 765.5 with UW-La Crosse placing first with 1150.5 points.

On the men's side, Joe Clapp (Faribault, MN/) placed first in three events, the 100-yard backstroke (52.71), 100-yard butterfly (52.07) and 50-yard freestyle (21.06).

Sam Davy (Stevens Point, WI/) placed first in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle with times of 47.74 and 1:47.73, respectively. He also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.80.

Ian Girdley (Verona, WI/) and Alex Loftus (Janesville, WI/) also bought in two first place finishes in their respected events. Girdley finished with a time of 54.39 in the 100-yard backstroke and 1:56.65 in the 200-yard backstroke. Loftus posted times of 1:10.52 and 1:00.38 in the 200-yard and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.

The Pointers Zack Desy (Escenaba, MI/) tallied the team's 10th individual first place with a time of 2:03.60 in the 200-yard butterfly.

Eric Emerson (River Falls, WI/) placed second in both the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.04 and the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.83.

The UWSP men also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:24.44) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.53) and second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:23.39) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.93)

For the women, Andrea Wagner (Apple Valley, MN/) tallied two first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (54.00) and 50-yard freestyle (24.97).

Anna Nyland (Eau Claire, WI/) and Elizabeth Schaeffer placed first and second, respectively, in the one-meter dive while Schaffer also finished second in the three-meter dive.

As a team, the Pointers brought home first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.53 and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.17.

The UW-Stevens Point men's and women's swimming and diving teams returns to action as they host UW-La Crosse next Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
