STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team held UW-Platteville to 26.3 percent shooting from the field and
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) recorded her second double-double of the season as the Pointers defeated the Pioneers 80-53 Wednesday night in Berg Gym.
The Pointers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on three field goals by
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) and another from Barber. A layup by
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) pushed the Pointers' lead to 23-13 with 8:50 remaining in the first half. The Pointers never surrendered the double-digit lead and entered halftime up 45-19.
After shooting a dismal 19 percent in the first half, the Pioneers shot 35.3 percent in the second half, but an all-around overwhelming performance by the Pointers proved to be insurmountable.
Barber finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Her previous double-double was on November 22 when she recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds against Millikin University. Averkamp and
Brooke Allen (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Both chipped in with six rebounds.
Liz Lawinger led the Pioneers (6-11, 2-6 WIAC) in scoring with 16 points.
Fifteenth-ranked UWSP (14-3, 16-2 WIAC) hosts 17th-ranked UW-River Falls this Saturday at 3p.m. at Berg Gym. UWSP will honor the 1987 and 2002 National Championship teams during halftime.
