STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored two goals in the third period to pull within one goal, but was unable to score the equalizer in the final minutes as the College of St. Scholastica came away with a 4-3 victory at K.B. Willett Arena.
Scholastica scored the lone goal of the first period at the 8:31 mark and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Pointers'
Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) evened the score at 1-1 with a power-play goal just two minutes in to the second period off assists from
Jon Bockmann (Wind Lake, WI/Muskego) and
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North).
The Saints responded under a minute later to again take the lead, 2-1. Another goal by the visiting Saints at the 17:54 mark of the period gave Scholastica a 3-1 edge after two.
Another Scholastica goal 1:41 in to the third period put the Pointers behind 4-1.
Politz tallied his second goal of the evening at the 14:22 mark of the third to pull the Pointers within two, and two minutes later
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) netted another goal to get the Pointers within one, 4-3.
A flurry of shots in the final minutes by the Pointers were turned away as the Saints were able to hold on for the victory.
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied 11 saves on the evening while Colin Rundell tallied 18 saves for the Saints.
UW-Stevens Point (8-8-3, 4-5-3 NCHA) will take the next weekend off and return to the ice on January 27 against UW-Eau Claire in Eau Claire. The Pointers then return home for the third annual Put a Check to Cancer Night on Jan. 28 against UW-River Falls.
