HANCOCK, Mich. - The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team returned to its winning ways on Friday evening, notching a 6-2 victory over the Lions of Finlandia University.
Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) put the Pointers on the board early in the first period on the power-play, thanks to assists from
Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield) and
Megan Nickelson (North St. Paul, MN/North).
Lunneborg followed with a goal of her own several minutes later off an assist from
Erika Greenen (Naperville, IL/Central) to give UWSP a 2-0 advantage after one period of play.
Stevens Point picked up where they left off in the second period as Tanzer scored her second goal of the night, again taking advantage of a power-play. Nickelson and
Emily Meyer (Crookston, MN/Crookston) were credited with assists.
At the 12:27 mark of the second period,
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) found the back of the net to give UWSP a commanding 4-0 lead.
Cassandra Salmen (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) and
Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) had assists on the goal.
In the third period, Stevens Point continued their offensive display, as
Sam Lorr (Chisago, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored 21 seconds into the period off an assist from Tanzer while Hanson scored four minutes later on another power-play. Marvin and
Nicole Schaub (Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) tallied assists on the final Pointer goal.
Finlandia scored a goal of their own seven minutes into the third and added with another at the 11:30 mark but it was not enough as UWSP went on to the 6-2 victory.
Johanna Sommers (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) earned the win in goal for the Pointers, recording nine saves.
UWSP (7-5-2, 6-2-1 NCHA) and Finlandia wrap up the series Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Area in Hancock, Mich.
