STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Holding a 3-1 advantage after two periods, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team gave up two power play goals in the final period and skated to a 3-3 with the Saints of the College of St. Scholastica.
Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead four minutes into the opening period off assists from
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and
Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline).
The Pointers extended their lead at the nine minute mark of the second period as
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) scored off a Travis Erstadt assist to put UWSP in front 2-0.
St. Scholastica answered within a minute, cutting the UWSP lead in half, 2-1.
The Pointers tacked on another goal at the 13 minute mark of the second period to again take a two-goal lead, 3-1 as
Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) scored unassisted.
In the third, a costly double-minor penalty by the Pointers gave the Saints, one of the nation's top power-plays, an opportunity to score two goals and knot the score at 3-3.
Neither team was able to push across a game-winner in the final minutes of the third or overtime and the score ended with the teams splitting the two points in the league standings.
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) finished with 26 saves on the evening for the Pointers while Colin Rundell tallied 19 for St. Scholastica.
UW-Stevens Point 8-7-3, 4-4-3 NCHA) and Scholastica (8-5-3, 3-3-3 NCHA) return to action on Saturday evening at Willett Arena. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
