STEVENS POINT - Nick Kenney (Wixom, MI/Walled Lake Western) scored with 1:16 left in the game as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team defeated UW-Superior on Saturday night at the K.B. Willett Arena 4-3.
The Pointers only held a lead for one minute and 54 seconds throughout the entire game as it seemed the Yellowjackets had an answer for the Pointers all night until Kenney beat the goalie off an assist from Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) to give the Pointers the win.
The win was the third straight for the Pointers, who have also won seven of their last eight games.
Heck got the scoring started for the Pointers as he scored 14:18 into the opening period to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Kenney was credited with an assist on the play.
UW-Superior had an answer as they scored 25 seconds later when Jeff Forsythe found the back of the net to make the score 1-1.
The Yellowjackets had the only goal of the second period when Justin Foryna scored 7:09 into the period on the power play to give them a 2-1 advantage.
The Pointers scored when Max Bobrow (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) deflected one in off a shot from Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN/Rochester) with 14:02 remaining in the game to tie the game up at two goals apiece.
The Pointers would then take the 3-2 lead, when a UW-Superior defensemen put one in his own net with 11:51 remaining in the game. Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) was credited with the goal and Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt) and Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) received assists on the play.
Just 13 seconds later the Yellowjackets answered when Joey Massingham scored to tie things up, 3-3 with 11:38 remaining.
It was then time for Kenney to deliver to game winner as he scored on a rebound off a shot from Heck to give the Pointers 4-3 victory.
The Pointers are now 8-8 in NCHA play and are now in a tie for third place with UW-Stout in the conference standings. Both the Pointers and Blue Devils are two points behind the Yellowjackets. St. Norbert has clinched the NCHA title.
One win for the Pointers next weekend will give them a top four seed and allow them to host an opening round series of the NCHA tournament.
The Pointers have two conference games remaining, both on the road next weekend. Next Friday the Pointers will face UW-Stout in Menomonie at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday the Pointers will play at UW-River Falls for a 7:05 p.m. start time.
