BROWN DEER – The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming & diving team holds a commanding 218 point lead after day two of the 2011 WIAC Championships and holds onto first place heading into the meet's final day on Saturday. The Pointer women also finish day two in first place, but hold a slim 13 point edge over UW-La Crosse.
The Pointer men captured six of the seven titles up for grabs on Friday while the women's team took home two individual titles and the 200 medley relay.
The 800 free relay team conference champion relay team of Ryan Farmer (Naperville, IL/), Luuk Dekkers (Ames,IA/), Dan Lynam (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) and Sam Davy (Stevens Point, WI/) finished with a time of 6:52.65
Joey Clapp (Faribault, MN/) took home the conference championship in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 51.55 in the finals.
Matt Olp (Oregon/Oregon) secured the conference title in the 100 breaststroke with his time of 56.62 in the event.
Kelly Kading (De Pere, WI/) took home the conference title in the 100 breaststroke, setting a new conference record and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships with a time of 1:03.92. Jenny Bussey finished second in the event and posted a provisional qualifying time of 1:05.91.
Davy secured the conference title in the 200 free and set a new conference mark with his winning time of 1:40.98.
Farmer took home the WIAC title in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 49.22. That mark also qualifies him for the NCAA Championships in March.
Lisa Clemens (Wisconsin Dells, WI/) took home the league's title in the 100 butterfly, setting a new conference record with a time of 57.36.
The men's 200 medley relay team also took home a league title on Friday as Clapp, Matt Teske (Faribault, MN/Faribault), Farmer and Olp posted a time of 1:32.64.
The Pointer women's 200 medley relay also took home a conference crown with their NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time of 1:44.55. Ashley Majewski (Elm Grove, WI/Catholic Memorial), Kading, Lisa Clemens (Wisconsin Dells, WI/) and Jess Nordstrom (Hibbing, MN/Hibbing) combined for the victory.
The Pointers return to the pool for the final day of action on Saturday at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.
