Heck scores twice as Pointers snap skid

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) scored the equalizer midway through the second period and added the game-winner in the third period as the Pointers snapped their six-game winless streak by defeating the 15th-ranked Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire 2-1 Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

As it did Friday, UW-Eau Claire jumped on UWSP early in the first period on a Brian Nehring goal, giving the Blugolds an early 1-0 lead. The Pointers recovered in the first despite UWEC outshooting UWSP 10-3 in the period. The Pointers also held the Blugolds 0-for-3 on power play opportunities.

In the second, Heck evened the game at one apiece, beating UWEC goalie Brandon Stephenson.

With 2:44 remaining in the third, Heck took control again, putting UWSP up 2-1 on his seventh goal of the season. The Pointers held the lead the rest of the game for their third victory of the season.

Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) stopped 22 of 23 shots Eau Claire fired on target in the victory while Stephenson stopped 17 of 19 in the loss. Will Aide (Bismarck, ND/Bismarck) was credited for two assists in the game and Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) with one.

UWEC outshot UWSP 23-19 in the contest while both teams were unsuccessful on its power play opportunities.

UW-Stevens Point (3-6-2, 2-4-2 NCHA) returns to action on Friday as it travels to Menomonie to face UW-Stout in a two-game weekend series. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
