STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 15th-ranked UW-Eau Claire Blugolds scored with 9.7 seconds remaining in the second period, breaking a 1-1 tie, and added to its advantage through the third to defeat the Pointers, 4-1, Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.
UWEC caught the Pointers off guard early, as Jared Williams converted a goal 19 seconds into the first period for the early Blugold lead.
Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) brought the Pointers back to even on his second goal of the season, assisted by
Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) and
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell), tying the game at one apiece.
The Blugolds controlled the puck in the second as they outshot the Pointers 11-4 in the period. Ross Andersen gave UWEC the lead with 9.7 seconds left on his second goal of the season, giving the Blugolds a 2-1 advantage into the third.
Anderson added his second goal of the game early in the third, putting UWEC up two.
UWSP could not take advantage of a third period power play opportunity as Brandon Stephenson stopped all nine shots in the final stanza for the victory.
Williams capped off the Blugolds scoring with an open net goal as the third period came to a close with UWEC on top, 4-1.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) (1-2-1) took the loss as he recorded 15 saves while Stephenson (5-3-0) tallied 19 in the victory.
UW-Stevens Point (2-6-2, 1-4-2 NCHA) returns to action on Saturday as they wrap-up the weekend series with UW-Eau Claire. Game time is 7 p.m.
Saturday night is also the first ever Teddy Bear Toss as fans are asked to bring a new teddy bear to the game. When the Pointers score, fans are asked to toss their bears onto the ice. All teddy bears will be collected and donated to three great local charities.
