Gibson caps off comeback

STEVENS PIONT, Wis. - Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) scored the game winning goal 32 seconds into overtime as the Pointers came back from three goals down to defeat Augsburg College 4-3 Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

UW-Stevens Point fell behind late in the first period as the Auggies capitalized on a Pointer turnover to take a 1-0 lead.

George Jackson and Tim Serratore added second-period goals giving Augsburg a 3-0 advantage midway through the frame.

The Pointers began their comeback late in the second period as Jon Bockmann (Wind Lake, WI/Muskego) scored a power play goal with 2:02 remaining to cut the Auggies lead to two. Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) and Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) were credited with assists.

In the third, Nick Kenny closed the gap halfway through the period after knocking in a rebound shot of the stick of Travis Erstad (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) for his second of the season.

With the momentum on their side, UWSP evened the game up 1:11 later as Politz tied the game on his first goal of the season. Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Meo were credited with assists.

The Pointers had an opportunity to win the game as they had a power play opportunity with just over two minutes remaining, but the Auggies defense held strong forcing overtime.

In overtime, UWSP fired two consecutive unsuccessful shots on Augsburg goalie Justin Lochner but the third one by Gibson found the back of the net resulting in a 4-3 for the Pointers.

In his first collegiate start, Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied his first win as he stopped 17 of 20 shots. Lochner stopped 43 shots on 47 chances.

Point outshot Augsburg 47-20 on the night and converted 1-of-5 power plays opportunities compared to 0-for-4 for the Auggies.

UW-Stevens Point (2-2, 1-1 NCHA) returns to action Saturday night as it hosts Gustavus Adolphus at K.B. Willett Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
