STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's hockey team started the season strong with a 4-2 win over St. Olaf on Friday at the Ice Hawks Arena.
Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) scored the first goal of year three minutes into the opening period on an assist from
Hannah Smith (Spokane, WA/East Valley).
The Oles evened the score seven minutes later on a Kira Clunis power play goal. However, the Pointers took the lead for good on a
Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) goal at the 17:55 mark, assisted by
Erika Greenen (Naperville, IL/Central) and
Janel Winters (Fairbanks, AK/West Valley).
UWSP blanked the Oles in the second period while adding two goals of their own. Greenen scored the third Pointer goal of the night on assists from
Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) and
Cassandra Salmen (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater). The final UWSP goal was scored by
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) at 9:53 with assists from Hanson and
Steph Lepak (Antigo, WI/Antigo).
Clunis struck again for St. Olaf in the third period, scoring her second goal of the night but it would not be enough as the Pointers held on for the victory.

Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) tallied 22 saves while St. Olaf's Ali McKeever recorded 33.The Pointers out-shot the Oles 37-24 in the win.
The two squads will take the ice again Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. match-up at the Ice Hawks Arena.
