Late Shorty, Empty Netter Push Blugolds Past Pointers

EAU CLAIRE – UW-Stevens Point held a 3-2 lead midway through the second period but UW-Eau Claire scored three unanswered in final 21 minutes of action to skate past the Pointer women's hockey team 5-3 at Hobbs Ice Center Friday evening. 

The loss drops the Pointers to 5-5-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play and 9-5-1 overall while the Blugolds improve to 9-5-2 overall, 6-4-1 in the NCHA. 

After a scoreless first period, Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) put the Pointers on the board just 3:01 into the second period. Eau Claire answered just 33 seconds later, as Kristin Faber evened the score with her first of three goals on the evening. 

Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) added her fourth goal of the season at the 5:52 mark of the second only to see Eau Claire again even the score at 2-2. 

Sam Lorr (Chisago, MN/Chisago Lakes) again put the Pointers in front with her sixth goal of the season at the 8:15 mark of the second period, scoring on the power play. 

Eau Claire's Faber tallied her 12th goal of the season and second of the game with just 48 seconds left in the second period, knotting the score at 3-3 after two periods.

In the third, the Pointers defense held the score at 3-3 until the Blugolds' Faber tallied her third goal of the game, shorthanded, putting Eau Claire in front 4-3. 

A late empty net goal by the Blugolds in the game's final minute made the final 5-3.

Staci Pomering (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) tallied 15 saves in goal for the Pointers while her counterpart Mara Stormer turned away 20 UWSP shots on net. 

The Pointers and Blugolds return to the ice at Hobbs Ice Center Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
