Women's Basketball Announces Recruiting Class

STEVENS POINT – UW-Stevens Point head women's basketball coach Shirley Egner has announced her recruiting class for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

Included in this year's class are three incoming freshmen as well as two NCAA Division II transfers. The newcomers add to an already talented group of returners that posted a 24-7 record and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

The recruiting class of 2010-11 includes: Keira Al-Mohareb (Greenfield/Whitnall/Univ. of Tampa), Samantha Barber (Scofield/DC Everest/Winona State), Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) (Brillion), Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst) (Amherst) and Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) (Grafton)

Al-Mohareb earned three varsity letters while playing for the Falcons of Whitnall and over her career averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. She scored a career-high 28 points against St. Thomas More in 2008-09 en route to leading the team to a 15-1 conference finish and their second straight conference title. She amassed 16 double-doubles in her career for Coach Keith Larson and was the Woodland South's Player of the Year her final two seasons, earning first team all-conference and All-Suburban team honors. Al-Mohareb transferred from the University of Tampa, but did not participate in basketball her freshman year, making her a true freshman eligibility-wise.

Barber appeared in 22 games her freshman season at Winona State, averaging 9.3 minutes per game. She averaged 4.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game and finished the year with 91 points for the Warriors. At D.C. Everest Barber was a two sport standout in volleyball and basketball. She amassed 1,038 career points with the Evergreens and collected 356 rebounds. She was named to the Associated Press All-State team, Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State team, Inside Wisconsin Sports All-State team and was a three-time Channel 7 All-Star.

Olp was also a three-time letterwinner with the Brillion Lions playing for Coach Ryan O'Leary. Her senior season she averaged 4.3 assists, 4.2 steals and 13.1 points per game while leading the team to a conference championship and a 2010 state tournament appearance. She was a first team all-conference honoree her final two seasons with the Lions and was also a three time all-conference selection for the Brillion softball team. An accomplished athlete in volleyball and cross country as well, Olp won nine varsity letters and was selected to the Post Cresent All-Area Basketball team her final season.

Pitt had a stellar three year career with the Amherst Falcons and coach Shelli Haferbecker. She amassed 910 points in just three seasons, missing her senior year due to an injury. She averaged 11.4 points, 4.6 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 steals over those three seasons and helped lead the Falcons to three straight CWC-8 titles and a state championship in 2009. Pitt received Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-State votes her sophomore and junior seasons in addition to being named to the all-tournament team at the annual Sentry Classic Tournament in Stevens Point.

Tyler was a three year letterwinner for the Grafton Black Hawks and was a member of two state championship teams. She averaged 9.8 points and seven rebounds per contest over her career for coach Bob Maronde and earned honorable mention all-conference accolades her senior season. While with the Black Hawks, the team won three straight regional championships, back-to-back conference championships in 2008 & 2009 and the Division 2 state title in 2007 and 2009.

The Pointer women's basketball team will open the 2010-11 season with an exhibition game against NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay Phoenix on November 6 before traveling to St. Paul, Minn. for the regular season opener against the University of St. Thomas on Nov. 15.
