Pointers Can't Slow Down No. 4 Saints

DULUTH – Tied 1-1 early in the second, the fourth-ranked Saints of St. Scholastica tallied three second period goals to pull away and send the Pointer men's hockey team home with a 6-2 loss on Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Sophomore Jon Madden (Brighton, MI) brought the game back to even early in the second period with his 12th goal of the season with Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN) being credited with the assist.

The Pointers had an opportunity later in the second period to take the lead but a short-handed goal by St. Scholastica's Aaron Spotts, assisted from Jordan Chong, with 15:44 left in the second gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. At the 13:43 mark Spotts and Chong were once again in on the scoring action by reversing roles giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.

Joel Langevin extended the Saints lead later in the second with assist from Tyler Miller, one of his three on the evening.

The Saints offense came out firing in the third period connecting on two of their 14 shots to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Jeremy Dawes scored at the 16:05 mark and Freshman Brett Corcoran added a goal with 5:41 left in the game.

Detlefsen tried to close the gap with an unassisted goal with 6:45 left but the Pointers could not spark anymore offense on the night.

The Pointers racked up 14 penalties on the night leading to 36 penalty minutes and eight power play opportunities for the Saints compared to 11 penalties, 22 minutes and six power plays for the Pointers. The Saints capitalized on two of their eight power plays while the Pointers came up empty on all six of theirs.

UW-Stevens Point fell to 10-12-1 overall and 5-11-0 in the NCHA. Fourth-ranked St. Scholastica improved to 16-3-4 overall and 10-2-4 in the NCHA.

The Pointers are set to take the ice with two games next week on Friday and Saturday against UW-River Falls and UW-Stout in their final regular season games. Face off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both nights at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.
