Pointers Fall in NCHA Quarterfinal Game One

SUPERIOR – The Yellowjackets of UW-Superior jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period and added two more in the third to skate past the UW-Sevens Point women's hockey team 5-2 in the opening round of the 2010 NCHA quarterfinals.

The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the second game of a two game series to decide who will advance to the tournament semifinals. If the Pointers win, the two teams will square off in a 20 minute mini-game.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to their 3-0 lead thanks to two even strength goals and a power play goal in the first 11 minutes of the game's opening period.

The Pointers scored their first goal of the game at the 13:12 mark of the first, as Brooke Hanson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) scored on the power play, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) added another Pointer goal at the 5:57 mark of the second period, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2, scoring off a Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) and Catherine Morrow (Portage/West Allis Central) assist.

In the third, the Yellowjackets scored shorthanded at the 3:23 mark to push their lead back to two, 4-2 and added another goal at the 8:01 mark to push the advantage to three.

Superior goaltender Melissa Kunzelman turned away 24 Pointer shots on goal on the evening while d'Andra Phillips stopped 23 in suffering the loss.
