Pointers Down St. Thomas 4-1 in Home Opener

Box Score

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point Women's Hockey team defeated St. Thomas 4-1 on Friday at Ice Hawks Arena to improve their record to 3-0 on the season.

The Pointers struck first in the game as Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) scored a power play goal with 24 seconds remaining in the first period. Tanzer was assisted Ashley Maskel and Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View).

Sam Lorr (Chisago, MN/Chisago Lakes) put the Pointers up 2-0 midway through the second period as she scored from Tanzer and Marvin. St. Thomas answered less than two minutes later on a goal from Taylor Schluter.

The Pointers Megan Nickelson (North St. Paul, MN/North) scored with under five minutes remaining in the third period on a pass from Sarah Dusold (Shoreview, MN/Irondale) to give the Pointers a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.

After 15 minutes of a scoreless action in the third, Tanzer put the finishing touches on the Tommies scoring again off an assist from Marvin and giving the Pointers a 4-1 lead.

Staci Pomering (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) made several key saves throughout the game as she finished with 23 saves, improving her record to 3-0 on the season.

Pomering and the Pointers defense was great all night especially against the power play in which they stopped all five Tommies power plays they faced.

The Pointers and Tommies will meet again tomorrow afternoon at Ice Hawks Arena with faceoff set for 2:30 p.m.
