Pointers spread the wealth in season-opening victory, 6-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team opened the 2010-11 season on Friday evening with a 6-1 win over against St. Olaf College. Six different Pointers scored a goal in the season opener.

The Oles stuck first, tallying the game's first goal in the fifth minute. 

The Pointers responded with two goals before the end of the game's opening period, as Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) and Ashley Maskel each tallied power play goals to put the Pointers in front 2-1.

In the second period, the Pointers added two more goals, this time from newcomers Sam Loree and Cassandra Salmen (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) as the Pointers pushed their advantage to 4-1 after two periods of play.

In the third, the Pointers added two more goals for good measure as Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) and Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield) each scored to put the Pointers in front by the final of 6-1. 

The Pointers held the edge 40-23 in shots on the evening and sophomore goalkeeper Staci Pomering (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) earned the victory in net with 22 saves. UWSP were an impressive 4-7 on the power play while going 4-5 on the penalty kill.

UW-Stevens Point (1-0-0) and St. Olaf (0-1-0) take to the ice tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the two game series.
